Piping Fabrication Shop Manager 

(Union Shop)

Affino is seeking a Piping Fabrication Shop Manager, responsible for the day-to-day operation of a small, unionized fabrication shop. This role is hands-on, overseeing production, coordinating union labor, and ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable codes and contract requirements. The Manager works closely with union employees, field teams, and project management to keep work moving and resolve issues quickly.

Key Responsibilities

Direct and coordinate daily shop activities including pipe fabrication and welding

Plan and adjust work schedules based on manpower, priorities, and project demands

Ensure efficient use of a small workforce, often balancing multiple projects at once

Step in on the floor as needed to support production and troubleshoot issues

Coordinate workforce in accordance with collective bargaining agreements

Assign work, manage crew sizes, and track hours in line with union rules

Maintain positive working relationships with union stewards and representative

Address grievances, jurisdictional questions, and work assignments appropriately

Ensure all fabrication meets required codes and standards (e.g., ASME B31.1, B31.3)

Review drawings, isometrics, and work packages with crews before fabrication begins

Maintain documentation for inspections, weld procedures, and traceability

Enforce OSHA, company, and union safety requirement

Lead daily/weekly safety talks and ensure safe work practices on the shop floor

Quickly address hazards and ensure corrective actions are implemented

Communicate closely with project managers, field supervisors, and customers

Track job progress, manpower, and deadlines; adjust priorities as needed

Assist with estimating projects for shop fabrication

Manage incoming materials, staging, and inventory in a limited shop space

Ensure tools and welding equipment are maintained and available

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Small shop setting requiring routine presence on the floor

Manage changes in priorities and manpower needs

Qualifications

7–10+ years of piping fabrication experience in a union environment

3+ years of supervisory or foreman-level experience

Strong background in shop fabrication (not just field installation)

Ability to read and interpret isometric drawings, spool sheets, and P&IDs

Working knowledge of welding processes (SMAW, GTAW, etc.)

Familiarity with applicable piping codes and QA/QC requirements

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to be on the shop floor as needed

Capable of lifting up to 50 lbs and working around active fabrication equipment

What We're Looking For

Experience working within collective bargaining agreement

Strong leadership with the ability to manage and motivate union crews

Practical problem-solving skills with a “lead from the floor” approach

Clear communicator who can work effectively with both labor and management

Lead efforts to increase efficiency in the fab shop

PREFERRED

UA (United Association) background or similar union trade experience

Welding certifications or inspection experience (CWI a plus)

Experience managing small crews (5–20 employees)
